Topeka: A City Coming of Age

Two years ago, Ingram’s Magazine looked at Topeka and described it as a “city on the verge.” In 2005, that potential is starting to become a reality.

Topeka’s picture of success is not smoke and mirrors. It’s no accident that this community has nearly as many successes expanding existing businesses as it does with new firms. In everything from the community’s extensive business incentives to the remarkable rebirth of Downtown, this community has charted an enviable balance between attracting new growth and growing from within.

Much of the strength of Topeka and surrounding Shawnee County is rock solid. The area lies at the crossroads of key interstate highways and within miles of the geographic center of the United States. With one of the lowest costs of living in the country and superb amenities, from higher education to lifestyle, it’s not surprising that Topeka has drawn national attention as a great place to live and work.

Perhaps most significantly, a majority of the community obviously supports continued progress. Small enough to attain real consensus, this city has given consistent support to everything from economic development tax support to progressive development of the city’s Downtown area and riverfront. This spirit of collaboration and cooperation is a key reason. Topeka has found success in everything from growing jobs to staging community festivals.
